Ocean protection takes centre stage at the IT industry’s flagship sailing event.
The Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup Regatta is proud to announce The Final Straw Foundation as its newest charity partner, joining the regatta’s 25th anniversary celebrations this September.
The Final Straw Foundation will join the Silicon Cup’s three existing charity partners: The Genie’s Wish, The Andrew Simpson Foundation, and Greig City Academy. Their involvement will help support ocean health and sustainability – issues that are increasingly critical to both marine life and the communities that rely on the sea for recreation, sport, and livelihood.
The Final Straw Foundation is a registered charity based in Emsworth, Hampshire, working with schools, communities, and businesses to tackle plastic pollution and protect our marine environment. What began as a local beach clean-up initiative in 2018 has grown into a regional movement across the Solent area, promoting sustainable practices, supporting plastic-free alternatives, and educating thousands on reducing plastic waste. This partnership reflects the regatta’s commitment to ocean health, responsible sailing, and a cleaner future for all.
Speaking about the partnership, Bianca Carr, CEO of The Final Straw Foundation said, “This prestigious regatta brings together sailors and businesses who share our passion for the ocean, and we’re proud to highlight the importance of sustainability in sailing and marine sport. Protecting ocean health is vital not only for wildlife but also for those who depend on these waters for recreation and livelihood. By working together, we can inspire positive environmental change and ensure future generations can enjoy healthy seas and world-class sailing for years to come.”
Shaun Frohlich, chairman of the Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup Regatta, added: “It is brilliant to add The Final Straw Foundation into our fold. The Final Straw Foundation is a cause dear to our hearts. It is a charity that matters to many of the country’s top sailors, and we look forward to enjoying their help as well to make this year’s event our finest example in 25 years.”
Peter Jeffery, corporate and commercial partner of principal sponsor Russell-Cooke, commented: “Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Silicon Cup is a proud moment. It is an event that brings the tech sector together with a shared sense of purpose, combining competition on the water with support for causes that truly matter. We’re especially pleased to welcome The Final Straw Foundation as a new charity partner in this 25th anniversary year, strengthening the regatta’s focus on sustainability. Supporting initiatives like this reflects our broader commitment to being a responsible business; one that supports its community and the environment. We’re delighted to champion this important cause alongside our long-standing charity partners as part of this special milestone year.”
Now in its 25th year, the Silicon Cup is the UK’s largest charity regatta for the IT industry. Since its launch in 1999, it has raised more than £1.3 million for good causes and welcomed over 7,500 participants. The 2025 event takes place on 16–17 September, offering two days of yacht racing, networking, and fundraising in one of the world’s most iconic sailing grounds. Law firm Russell-Cooke is principal sponsor of the regatta for the third consecutive year. The firm advises a broad mix of commercial, regulatory, not-for-profit and private clients.
